Galapagos Islands Wildlife

Galapagos islands wildlife includes some of the world’s most unique  animals. Galapagos islands are ideal environment for many of the fascinating native species. Here are some of Galapagos islands wildlife:

Giant tortoises belong to Geochelone elephantopus species. They are vegetarian and really giants, it can weigh about 660 lbs. The males are bigger than the female. They can live over 100 years. Giant tortoise can survive for long periods without food or water, but they enjoy water when it is available.  They are endemic to the Galapagos.Galapagos Islands Wildlife

The land iguanas, Conolopholus subcristatus are also included in Galapagos islands wildlife.  They are abundant on three islands, Santa Fe, South Plaza and Femandina. They are good eating. The land iguanas are endemic to Galapagos. They are herbivorous.

The marine iguanas, Amblyrhynchus cristatus are the only sea-going lizard in the world. They swim using their tails and feed on marine algae and underwater beyond low tide exposure.  The big male can dive about 12 meters and stay underwater for up to 30 minutes. They have a few natural enemies.

There are three species of snakes in Galapagos islands wildlife

The two species inhabit the western and cental island. The third species inhabits the southeastern islands.

You should get in the water to see the marine animals in Galapagos islands at the best advantage. However, you still can see the following from the shore.

Sally Lightfoot Crabs stay in one place on the rocky shores of the Galapagos island. Sally Lightfoot Crabs are colorful. If the visitors get too close, they will hide behind the rocks.

The sea lions are the most visitors’ favorite marine animals in Galapagos islands. Sea lions are the clowns of the Galapagos.

The blue-footed booby can be found on many islands in the Galapagos. The dark-rumped Petrel is found only on the Galapagos and Hawaiian islands.

The Galapagos Flamingo resides in the salt lagoons hidden in lava fields behind the coasts of the islands. The Galapagos Hawk is the major native predator of most island lizards, including the marine and land iguanas and other reptiles.

The Galapagos penguin like other penguin species, they are unable to fly, but they use their wings and feet to swim speedily underwater.

The red-footed booby can be found throughout the Galapagos islands.

The Galapagos fur seal is little-known because it lives only on the  Galapagos island. The Galapagos penguin is light tan  with grayish brown on its back.

The Galapagos islands are one of the most amazing places to be visited.
